Nigeria accounts for approximately 27% of all malaria cases worldwide, making it the country with the highest malaria burden globally. In Plateau State, malaria is endemic, though the burden varies by season and altitude.
Symptoms of Malaria
Malaria symptoms typically appear 10–15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and may include fever and chills, headache, muscle aches and fatigue, nausea and vomiting, and in severe cases confusion and difficulty breathing.
Prevention Strategies
- Sleep under insecticide-treated bed nets — one of the most effective tools for preventing malaria
- Indoor residual spraying — spraying inner walls of homes with insecticide
- Eliminate breeding sites — remove stagnant water from around your home
- Use insect repellent — apply to exposed skin when outdoors
- Wear protective clothing — long-sleeved shirts and long trousers
- Seek prompt treatment — if you suspect malaria, get tested and treated immediately
SCHF's Malaria Prevention Programs
Supreme Care Health Foundation conducts regular community education sessions on malaria prevention, working with local leaders and health workers to promote behavior change and linkage to care.
We believe that informed communities are healthier communities. By equipping families with the knowledge and tools to prevent malaria, we can significantly reduce the burden of this preventable disease in Plateau State.
