Every year, millions of babies are born at risk of acquiring Hepatitis B, HIV, or Syphilis from their mothers during pregnancy or childbirth. These are entirely preventable infections — yet they continue to rob children of healthy futures.

Why Triple Elimination Matters

  • Without intervention, 70–90% of infants born to mothers with active Hepatitis B will develop chronic infection
  • Without treatment, 15–45% of babies born to HIV-positive mothers will acquire the virus
  • Untreated syphilis in pregnancy can cause stillbirth or severe disabilities in newborns

SCHF's Approach to EMTCT

  1. 1Antenatal Screening — we ensure pregnant women receive screening for Hepatitis B, HIV, and Syphilis early in pregnancy
  2. 2Prevention Interventions — for mothers who test positive, we provide counseling and referrals
  3. 3Newborn Prophylaxis Advocacy — we advocate for timely birth dose vaccination
  4. 4Community Mobilization — we engage community leaders to promote antenatal care

Our Results So Far

Through our maternal health programs, we have conducted triple elimination screening for hundreds of pregnant women, provided counseling to positive cases, and educated thousands of community members about EMTCT.

A Call to Action

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, please attend antenatal care early and ask to be screened for Hepatitis B, HIV, and Syphilis. These simple tests could save your baby's life.
